Announcing the Platform Team at EF

Platform is a new team inside the EF with one goal:

Deliver the strongest possible Ethereum platform, where L1 and L2s are best positioned to support users, apps, and all organizations building on Ethereum. This requires improving the L1 <> L2 relationship, so that we grow as a mutually reinforcing system across each layer.

Since the rollup-centric roadmap was first proposed 5 years ago, an ecosystem of chains has grown up around the Ethereum L1. The early mental model of rollups has given way to a network of differentiated L2s, each with distinct and valuable economies, extending Ethereum’s core properties to millions of users.

As Ethereum matures, we must do more to deliver a cohesive platform that fully leverages the unique capabilities of Ethereum as a system (L1 + L2s). This includes enhancing the value proposition of being an L2, tightening the flywheel so that L2 adoption drives value to Ethereum more broadly, guiding the ecosystem toward more secure and permissionless architectures, and making it easier to navigate for users and institutions adopting Ethereum. Importantly, part of delivering a strong Ethereum means pushing towards technological improvements that reinforce and amplify the core properties most essential to and uniquely enabled by Ethereum.

The Platform team will evaluate and acknowledge both the successes and shortcomings of Ethereum as a system. We should be live players, evaluating necessary improvements, while also being mindful of the tensions that exist on the path to building fixed systems that stand the test of time.

How this comes together in Platform

    • Protocol development

      • Product-led R&D to improve the strength of the ecosystem as a whole
      • Funnel ecosystem needs into protocol roadmap and fork planning
      • Ensure protocol upgrades translate into real-world adoption and usage
    • Protocol integration

      • Proactive engagement with builders and institutions to provide guidance on protocol, roadmap, and technical integrations
    • Strategy and tracking

      • Ensure positive feedback loops across L1 + L2 strategy
      • Metrics to track network health
      • Improve Ethereum ecosystem legibility across public dashboards

    What this provides to Ethereum

    • Clear, shared understanding of L1 and L2 roles
    • A protocol and network that best leverages the strengths of each layer
    • L2 adoption reinforces Ethereum’s core properties and ETH, and L1 growth provides a more powerful foundation for L2s
    • Clear and compelling pathways for organizations and institutions to adopt Ethereum

We are excited to get Platform off the ground and accelerate many key initiatives together with the broader community. Stay tuned for updates and more info.
